First off, I have to say that I didn’t read the whole article.
My thoughts: Government has traditionally, for centuries and in many different cultures, funded art. Often, art has become a tool of the government which funded it. Nevertheless, some of that government funded art remains with us today and is esteemed for its merit as art.
But, no flak. Even though I only scanned his article, I can see Stossel’s point.
I recall, in the very early 1970’s, watching Sesame Street on an NBC affiliate. There was no PBS station in the area – and yet Bird Bird and friends were still on TV. That changed when a PBS transmitter was put in place locally, but before that? “Operating in the public interest” was something stations concerned themselves about. Alright, being SEEN as operating in the public interest.
Interesting. We had a PBS affiliate, but outside of the kids shows and occasional old movie I didn’t recall ever actually watching it.
